TEHRAN, Jan 1 (AFP) - Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will hold his
first meeting with the nation's largest pro-reform student group in three
years on Tuesday, a conservative newspaper said. Khamenei will meet with leaders from the Office to Consolidate Unity (OCU)
and other student groups who are expected to convey their "worries and expectations," the Kayhan daily said Monday.
It said Khamenei, who has final say on all matters of state, had not met with the group in three years.
The OCU has been at the centre of a number of recent political firestorms and its political director, Ali Afshari, was arrested last month for allegedly insulting Khamenei during a pro-reform campus rally.
He reportedly called for a public referendum on the principle of "velayat-e-faghi," which invests ultimate power in the Islamic republic's supreme clerical leader.
The OCU's annual conference in August was cut short after days of violent clashes erupted when two leading critics of the clerical regime were physically blocked from addressing the gathering.
