TEHRAN A large number of residents in the city of Saravan have sent a letter to Majlis Speaker Mahdi Karrubi and called for legal action against their representative in Parliament.

The deputy from Saravan, Gholam-Mohammad Jahandideh, was recently arrested at Dubai airport on charges of possessing 28 grams of opium. He was imprisoned in Dubai for 16 days, but was later released and sent back to
Iran, thanks to efforts made by Iran's Embassy in UAE.

The letter, which was also signed by members of Saravan City Council, said that Jahandideh lacked the qualifications to represent the people of Saravan due to his dark record before and after the victory of the revolution. Jahandideh's arrest was very embarrassing for the Iranian people and the Majlis deputies. However, no investigation has so far been made into his offense.

A member of the Majlis Presiding Board, Mohammad Naimipour, told the Tehran-e Emrouz weekly that any investigation into the case by the Majlis deputies or the Presiding Board should be sanctioned by the Judiciary.

Naimipour added that no official from the Judiciary has responded to the Majlis inquiry request.

Another deputy and Chairman of the Parliamentary Article 90 Commission, Hossein Ansari-Rad, told the Tehran-e Emrouz that no complaint against Jahandideh has so far been filed with the commission.
