BERLIN, Jan 13 (AFP) - German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer summoned Saturday the Iranian ambassador for urgent talks after a court handed down jail terms to several reformers who had attended a conference in Germany. Fischer "is following developments in Iran with great concern" and has summoned the ambassador for "urgent talks" on Sunday, said a foreign ministry spokesman.
The German foreign minister "will certainly convey his deep concern" about the hefty jail sentences, he said.
Maverick journalist Akbar Ganji, long a thorn in the side of the conservatives, was slapped with a 10-year prison sentence and a further five-year exile from Tehran after he gets out of jail.
Prosecutors argued that the conference held in April in Berlin was "un-Islamic" and was aimed at overthrowing the clerical regime.
