The Tehran Times January 25, 2001 SHIRAZ MPs representing the southern Iranian Province of Fars sent an open letter to President Mohammad Khatami demanding identification of an antigovernment unrest in the southern region of Lamerd last December. "Incitations provoked by certain elements led to shattering of windowpanes of governmental buildings and insulting local officials which were below the dignity of the Islamic Republic," the letter said. The signatories decried the melee which, they said, was touched off only for tribal gains. The trouble erupted a Friday after a prayer leader blasted local officials over "insufficient social services," prompting residents to interrupt a speech by the local governor to address the complaints. The unrest in Fars Province was finally brought under control by volunteer Basij Forces and riot forces from the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC). Later on, a State Security Council investigation was launched to the unrest whose report was said to be made public after the investigation. IP: Logged |
