TEHRAN, Jan 29 (AFP) - The reform-majority parliament on Monday approved some 20 million dollars in funds to fight US influence in the Islamic republic. The measure, passed as MPs continue a line-by-line evaluation of the budget for the next Iranian year which begins in March, is aimed at battling the influence and "cultural invasion" of the United States. The debate on the amount of this budget, which will be at the discretion of the office of the presidency, was carried live on state radio. The 20-million-dollar amount approved Monday is in line with similar spending in years past by Iran, which has not had diplomatic relations with Washington since April 1980. Iran's conservatives have frequently denounced what they call the "US-style" social and political reforms put forward by President Mohammad Khatami and his allies. Late last year parliament took initial steps to allow Iranian citizens to sue the United States, in retaliation for a similar piece of legislation passed by Washington. The US imposes unilateral sanctions on Iran, particularly aimed at its lucrative oil sector, but lifted controls on some non-oil Iranian exports last year. Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi said last month that Tehran was hoping new US President George W. Bush will change Washington's attitude toward the Islamic republic. IP: Logged |
