TEHRAN, Jan 30 (AFP) - Russian ultranationalist Vladimir Zhirinovsky was
received with honor by parliament, where he met with deputy speaker Behzad Nabavi, state television announced. Zhirinovsky, whose visit to Iran was not previously announced by local media, was making an "exploratory trip" to Tehran at the head of a Russian parliamentary delegation and will meet with a number of MPs, an Iranian source said.

President Mohammad Khatami is due to start a two-day official visit to Moscow on March 19.

A self-styled hardline nationalist, Zhirinovsky once famously vowed to become president and "wash Russian army boots in the Indian Ocean." He was charged four years ago with starting a brawl in the parliament.

However, his Liberal Democratic Party of Russia has generally supported government policy.
