Text of report by Iranian newspaper Aftab-e Yazd web site on 13 February

Ayatollah Khaz'ali's remarks about the Lord of the Age [the 12th Shi'i imam, also known as the Hidden Imam] and related matters have led to a variety of reactions in the religious community and the news media. In this connection, Ayatollah Mohammad Aba'i has criticized Ayatollah Khaz'ali's viewpoints on the basis of religious norms and beliefs. Ayatollah Khaz'ali had recently said in Fars: If there is a message from the Lord of the Age, I will announce it and I am not at all afraid. He added: There is someone who is in contact with the Lord of the Age. On 22 Bahman 57 [11 February 1979], he brought a message to the imam [Khomeyni] from the Lord of the Age, saying: Tell the people not to sit in their houses but to come out into the streets; and the imam ordered that the people should come out into the streets and the revolution achieved victory. I am in contact with that gentleman.

Let us read Ayatollah Mohammad Aba'i-Khorasani's views.

Reasons have been given in religious narratives and the hadith [words and deeds attributed to the Prophet] to the effect that, if anyone claims to have seen His Holiness the Lord of the Age, reject it. In our opinion, the reason for this order is that, if the way is opened to doing this, there will be a great deal of opportunity for abuse. The point that has to be borne in mind here is that there is no means of proving or disproving someone who claims to see the Lord of the Age. And, if we accuse some people of lying, they will say: What is the difference between us and others who have made similar claims. At the same time, people who make this claim cannot prove it. I believe that people like His Eminence Imam Khomeyni have experienced the blessing of seeing His Holiness the Lord of the Age and our religious guides, but they have not recounted it to anyone. It is unheard of for distinguished figures such as Imam Khomeyni, the late Ayatollah Golpayegani, the late Haj Sheykh Abdolkarim Ha'eri, Allameh Tabataba'i, Allameh Amini, Professor Motahhari, Mirza Shirazi, when they wished to present views on theology, religious jurisprudence, religious principles, philosophy and social affairs or to express their opinion on something, to attribute their remarks to His Holiness the Lord of the Age.

Even Haj Sheykh Mahmud Halabi never did this. And the reason is clear. If the way is opened to doing this, some people can lead naive individuals astray and the scene will be set for the appearance of figures such as Ali Mohammad Bab, who considered himself worthy of and on a par with the Lord of the Age.
