Former Iranian spymaster to run for president

TEHRAN, Feb 19 (Reuters) - A former Iranian intelligence chief accused by some reformers of involvement in the murder of dissidents said on Monday he would run in presidential polls in June, Iran's news agency IRNA reported.

Ali Fallahiyan, a Shi'ite Muslim cleric who was intelligence minister from 1989 until 1997, has denied involvement in what reformers say were dozens of murders of intellectuals and dissidents in Iran over the past decade.

A staunch hardliner, Fallahiyan failed to win a seat in parliamentary elections last year which were swept by reformist backers of President Mohammad Khatami.

A German court in 1997 named Fallahiyan as one of the instigators of the murder of four Kurdish dissidents in a Berlin restaurant five years earlier. He denied the charge and blamed it on manipulation by foreign powers and Iranian exiles.

Khatami has not yet said whether he will seek re-election in the June 8 elections, but he is widely expected to run.
