TEHRAN, April 29 (AFP) - Residents of Tehran gathered in the north of the
capital Saturday to protest at the seizure of their land by a powerful
state religious foundation, the official IRNA agency reported.
The owners of land in Tehran's northern residential sector of Evin, showed
their displeasure after learning that their property was no longer theirs
but belonged to "Astan-e-Ghods Razavi," a religious foundation based in
the eastern province of Khorassan.

"Years ago we bought these lands from the town hall and now Astan-e-Ghods
say they belong to them," the demonstrators were quoted as saying by IRNA.

A Tehran court confirmed in March that the land belonged to the foundation.

Its spokesman for property said "all the lands of Evin were offered to the
foundation 150 years ago."

IRNA said that a meeting between the two sides will be held at the Tehran
governorate to put an end to the dispute.

Astan-e-Ghods Razavi is an old and wealthy foundation that looks after the
interests of the eighth Shiite Imam Reza, whose tomb is a pilgrimage site
in Mashad, the main city of Khorassan province.
