I thought the following is kind of interesting. It shows that if Khatami's camp had a chance, they would have also screen candidates ....

Bitaraf Lampoons Shamkhani's Candidacy During Cabinet Meeting

The Tehran Times
By Our Staff Writer

May 21, 2001

TEHRAN A conversation between presidential candidate Ali Shamkhani and Energy Minister Habibollah Bitaraf turned awry during a cabinet meeting yesterday when the latter jokingly remarked to the former: "Well, at last you have become a candidate for the presidential election."

With a smile on his face, Shamkhani retorted, "Yes, so what?"

Bitaraf then asked: "What do you plan to do?

"Well, we're in a cabinet meeting not in an IIPP meeting. Please invite me to the office of the Islamic Iran Participation Party (IIPP), then I'll explain my agenda to you," Shamkhani responded.

Shamkhani is one of 10 candidates approved by the Guardian Council to join the June 8 presidential race.

Bitaraf, the current energy minister, is also an active member of the IIPP. His party is somewhat disappointed at Shamkhani's candidacy as it believes he should not have become a candidate because of his membership in Mr. Khatami's cabinet.

Following the call on Iranians residing in the US to participate in Iran's eighth presidential election, the grounds have been prepared for holding the elections in (?33) states and more than 60 constituencies. This has enabled the US-based Iranians to vote for their presidential candidates.

Also in New York, two constituencies have been installed for the Iranians living in this state or nearby areas.
