TEHRAN, June 3 (AFP) - A jailed opposition figure and brother-in-law of supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has made a failed attempt to commit suicide in his Tehran prison cell, reports said Sunday. The local press said Sheikh Ali Teherani, 70, who spent some ten years in exile in Iraq as an opponent of the Islamic regime, was being treated in hospital after slashing his wrists.
The Kayhan evening newspaper said Teherani's latest attempt to take his own life was his third since returning to Iran four years ago.
A harsh critic of Iran's Islamic republic, including founder Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, Teherani sought refuge in the 1980s in Iraq, where he used Iraqi radio to denounce the regime, particularly during the two neighbors' 1980-1988 war.
