Los Angeles, CA, USA. Violent clashes took place in Karadj, a suburb of Tehran, on July 10, between Bassidj troops and local citizens who peacefully protested against taxes increases.
The Student Movement Coordinating Committee for Democracy in Iran (SMCCDI) reported on July 11 that the property of several locals had been destroyed by authorities because of their inability to pay high taxes.
According to the SMCCDI reports, Bassidj troops attacked the demonstrators, using tear gas, chains and clubs. Angry demonstrators responded with stones and Molotov cocktails.
Dozens of demonstrators were hospitalized. That night, fire brigades were called in to extinguish barricades of fire made by the protesters, as well as two militia vehicles hit by Molotov cocktails.
Mass arrests followed the clashes and several protesters were taken to prison from the hospital.
