11 murderers hanged in Tehran prison

Tehran, July 19, IRNA -- Eleven Iranians, sentenced to death for murder, were hanged at dawn Wednesday in Tehran's Qasr Prison, a press report said Thursday.

The death sentence against the 11 murderers were upheld by the Supreme Court after being convicted by lower courts.

Three more, who were to have been executed at the same time, were spared at the last minute, after the heirs or relatives of their victims intervened, the daily Qods said.

Executions by hanging are carried out in Iran in accordance with the Islamic "eye-for-an-eye" law of retribution otherwise known as "qessas," sanctioned under religious tenets in force in the Islamic Republic since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Convicted murderer hanged in Shiraz

TEHRAN, July 19 (AFP) - A convicted murderer was hanged in the southern city of Shiraz, bringing to nine the number of executions made public in Iran on Wednesday, the conservative Jaam-e Jam paper reported Thursday. It said the man, only identified as Keramat, had stabbed to death another man four years ago, and was executed at dawn on Wednesday.

At the same time, prison authorities in Tehran told AFP that eight other men, sentenced to death for murder, had been hanged in the capital's Ghasr prison in the early hours of Wednesday, while five more were spared at the last minute after the heirs or relatives of their victims intervened.

The "eye for an eye" law in force in Iran since the Islamic revolution of 1979 calls for execution for all murders, but provides for the death sentence to be commuted to a lengthy jail term if the family of the victim pardons the killer.
