BBC Monitoring Service Jul 31, 2001 Text of report in English by Iranian news agency IRNA Mashhad, 1 August: A revolutionary court in the northeastern city of Torbat-e Heydariyeh has given three-month jail terms to two reformist activists for their role in "un-Islamic" celebrations which followed President Mohammad Khatami's re-election 8 June, a local source confirmed Tuesday [31 July]. "Javad Mohebbi, also a councillor, and Hasan Mortazavi have been sentenced to 91 years [figure as received, presumably 91 days] in jail and 40 lashes of a whip each," Ahmad Mashhadi, official in charge of the reformist 2 Khordad elections campaign headquarters in Torbat-e Heydariyeh told IRNA. "Four others, Vahid Arab, Mojtaba Modarressizadeh, Majid Khorrami and Iman Morassaie, have been slapped with suspended payment of cash fine," he added. The judge handling the case, known as Mas'udi, told IRNA that 39 people were arrested in polls celebrations. "22 of them have been given suspended jail sentences, eight sentenced to cash fine payment and four others to flogging and jail," he said, adding two were acquitted. The judge did not give any word on the jail terms, nor did he mention the names of those slapped with jail. He said that the convicts who were informed of the rulings a week ago can appeal 20 days after the date they were told of the verdict... Khatami's victory triggered jubilation in several cities and residents in several cities distributed sweets and cheered slogans in his support. IP: Logged |
