TEHRAN, Aug 1 (AFP) - Iranian officials next week will launch a special operation to round-up beggars and street children across the nation, the state IRNA news agency reported Wednesday. The operation is scheduled to begin August 10 and was approved by the interior ministry, IRNA said adding that it will be carried out under the supervision of police forces, the municipalities and the state-run welfare organization.
The rounded-up beggars and street children will be placed in the care of the welfare organization and the Imam Khomeini Aid Committee, a foundation created just after the 1979 Islamic revolution and named after the founder of the Islamic republic, the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.
No official statistics are available on the number of beggars and street children, but a notable increase has been witnessed in recent months in various parts of Tehran, as well as other major cities across the nation.
Street children and beggars are found at nearly every red light in Tehran -- a 10-million strong city, selling chewing gum, flowers, or offering to clean car windows.
