TEHRAN, Jan 7 (Reuters) - A convicted murderer was publicly hanged in Iran"s capital Tehran on Sunday for killing his wife and 19-month-old daughter, witnesses said.

They said Hassan Faylom was led out of Qasr prison in central Tehran and gradually hoisted aloft by a large crane in front of acrowd of some 2,000 people which included victims" relatives.

Faylom was found guilty of stabbing his wife and daughter to death "in order to satisfy his lust and that of his lover" the official IRNA news agency said, without giving further details.

Iran enforces strict Sharia Islamic law and endorses public executions and lashings for certain crimes.

Public executions in the capital are nevertheless a comparatively rare event. The courts had ruled that Faylom should be publicly hanged as his crimes had hurt public sentiment.
