Tehran, Jan 13, IRNA -- Political activist Ali Afshari was sentenced to five years in prison by a revolutionary court in Tehran, it was announced here on Saturday.
Afshari's defense lawyer Abdol-Fattah Soltani told IRNA his client has been sentenced to four years in jail for attending Berlin Conference, to six months in prison on charge of establishing crisis center in the Office
Soltani added Afshari has been acquitted on charge of insulting the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and his case on charge of spying for foreigners is pending in the revolutionary court.
Soltani said he has filed an objection to the ruling and the case would be sent to appeals court.
Ali Afshari was one of several Iranian political activists and journalists who attended a conference in Berlin in April. The conference which had been organized by Heinrich Boell Foundation as assessed as a conspiracy against national security of Iran and 16 participants were summoned to court and stood trials following returning to Iran.
The verdicts of most of the defendants were announced today. Akbar Ganji, another journalist who attended the conference was sentenced to 10 years in jail and five years in exile.
Six of the defendants were acquitted. They are Mohammad Ali Sepanlou, Alireza Alavitabar, Hamid-Reza Jalaeipour, Mahmoud Dowlatabadi, Jamileh Kadivar and Monireh Ravanipour.
